Grant was formerly Director of the Anglican Education Commission, Diocese of Sydney. He has taught in Anglican and state schools and has worked as a consultant with schools in developing strategic directions and in reviewing their Christian ethos and teaching programs. He is Chair of the NSW Inter-Church Commission on Religious Education in Schools and is a member of the Anglican Schools Corporation. His research interests have been in Australian religious history and educational policy and is writing a biography of Frederick Barker, second Anglican Bishop of Sydney.

Ian was formerly Principal of the Swan Christian College, Perth, Western Australia. He taught English and History in schools and has lectured in the School of Education, Edith Cowan University. He is President of the Australian Association of Pastoral Care in Education and was the founding president of World4One, an international Christian school learning alliance. He has served as the chief executive officer of the Swan Christian Education Association, and has been an educational adviser to a number of Christian aboriginal schools in Western Australia.
